New Medicare Legislation Increases List of
Eligible Originating Telehealth Sites
On July 15, 2008, HR 6331, the Medicare Improvement for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, was successfully enacted into law (Public Law 110-275) after both the Senate and the House of Representatives overrode President's Bush's veto. This legislation contained several telehealth payment-related provisions, expanding the list of eligible originating sites for telehealth services.
Section 149 of the law outlines three new sites eligible for payment of telehealth services beginning on or after January 1, 2009:
- skilled nursing home facilities;
- hospital-based renal dialysis centers (including satellites); and,
- community mental health centers.
The expansion of originating sites facilitates the dissemination of telehealth services across the U.S. and increases Medicare patient access to vital health care services not originally available locally.

The 6th Annual Telehealth Leadership Conference was a success!
The Telehealth Leadership Initiative (TLI) hosted the 6th Annual "Telehealth Leadership Conference" (TLC) in Washington, DC from June 9-11, 2008. This three-day conference featured multiple seminars on telehealth policy and legislative advocacy, and is the only telehealth conference focused solely on telehealth public policy issues.
In addition to great conference sessions and networking opportunities, participants met with CMS and FCC officials, and over 400 Congressional meetings were conducted!
If you haven’t done so, please complete the evaluation form for the TLC and fax the completed form to 202/230.5303.
The following Thank You Letter Template may be used to send to the Congressional offices you met with on Wednesday, June 10, 2008. Please visit www.house.gov or www.senate.gov for the Congressional offices' addresses.

A special thanks to Tandberg for their sponsorship of the TLC!
